Build Account Deletion Beyond the App Screen

A deletion request needs an owned backend process and an honest completion state, not only a button.

Removing a profile from an app's settings screen does not necessarily remove the account behind it. A complete implementation must understand connected records, active sessions and external services, while giving the user a clear way to request and track the action.

SECTION 01

Find the account beyond the profile table

List authentication records, uploaded files, device tokens, support-system references and user-created content. Decide what deletion does to shared business records and organization membership. Do not let removing one employee's login silently delete an employer's entire workspace. The responsible business and policy owners must approve retention decisions; the development agency implements and tests them.

Apple's guidance distinguishes account deletion from temporary disabling. Google Play describes applicable in-app and external deletion-request routes. These are platform requirements, not a complete legal compliance assessment. Review the current rules for your app and make the implemented journey match the descriptions submitted to the stores.

SECTION 02

Illustrative example: a user leaves a shared booking app

Imagine a staff member requests deletion from a scheduling app used by a business. Their login and personal preferences have different ownership from the company's appointment records. The interface explains the approved outcome and confirms identity before recording the request. It does not promise that every shared record will disappear instantly.

A connected file service is temporarily unavailable. Keep the request in a recoverable processing state with an operator responsible for the exception. Repeating the job should not recreate the account or incorrectly announce completion. This hypothetical scenario makes the cross-system work visible before a proposal reduces deletion to removing one database row.

SECTION 03

Test sessions, failures and the final message

Ask for tests involving two signed-in devices, queued work, a failed downstream operation and a repeated request. Verify the agreed session-revocation behavior. If subscription management is involved, describe it explicitly rather than assuming account removal cancels every billing arrangement. Never use confusing extra steps simply to discourage a legitimate request.

Provide a request reference and a truthful completion message. If processing is not immediate, explain the expected procedure without inventing an unsupported deadline. Maintain only the necessary operational evidence under the approved policy and restrict who can inspect it. Acceptance should include a safe end-to-end deletion rehearsal across the agreed systems, plus a documented exception path.

SECTION 04

Frequently asked questions

Is hiding the profile the same as deleting it?

No. Hiding or deactivating an account may leave its authentication and data intact. Name each operation accurately.

Must every request finish immediately?

The design must meet applicable requirements and communicate its real processing behavior. Do not show completed while connected deletion work remains unresolved.

Who decides what records are retained?

The business and its qualified policy advisers decide the retention rules. The agency should document how those approved rules are implemented and tested.
