Sending an installation link to colleagues is useful, but it is not a complete beta plan. A business needs to know which workflows were tried, which devices were involved, and whether problems were fixed in the build intended for release.

SECTION 01
Choose testers for the work they represent
Include people who understand the business task and people who have not seen the design before. A dispatcher may find a missing approval step while a new user finds an unclear label. Build a practical device list covering your supported operating-system versions, screen sizes and connectivity conditions. Do not claim universal coverage from several similar flagship phones.
Apple TestFlight and Google Play testing tracks provide controlled distribution and feedback routes. Their platform rules determine access and review requirements; the project still needs its own tasks and acceptance decisions. Agree which testing track is appropriate and who administers it. Check current account requirements before promising a launch date.
SECTION 02
Illustrative example: testing a delivery confirmation
Suppose a delivery app asks a driver to open an assigned stop, take a sample photo and submit a completion. One tester tries it with a slow connection; another changes screen orientation during the form. Use invented deliveries and a controlled backend so the test cannot notify a real customer or mark a real shipment complete.
A report saying 'upload broken' needs clarification. Capture the build number, device, connection state, steps, visible message and whether the server received the upload. Redact personal data from screenshots. The agency can then reproduce the failure and attach the corrected build to the same issue rather than declaring it fixed after an unrelated local test.
SECTION 03
Make the exit decision explicit
Keep a small coverage table for the important journeys, including failures and recovery. Separate confirmed defects from feature requests and preferences. A beta should not become an uncontrolled expansion of scope, but a recurring confusion in a core task deserves investigation even when no crash occurs.
Ask the agency to provide the tested build, unresolved issues with impact, and evidence that critical fixes were retested. Decide who can accept a remaining limitation. Beta distribution does not itself establish production readiness or guarantee store approval. A first round with a manageable group often produces more actionable feedback than a wide invitation with no test instructions or response owner.
SECTION 04
Frequently asked questions
How many beta testers do we need?
Choose coverage of users, tasks and devices rather than an arbitrary headcount. Follow any applicable store testing requirements separately.
Can testers use real customer records?
Prefer safe sample accounts and data. If a controlled live pilot is necessary, agree its authority, privacy controls and operational consequences first.
Does a successful beta prove the published app works?
Only for the tested build and conditions. Verify the release build, configuration and production connections before making a broader claim.
